Boating tips

Throughout my past years of tournament bass fishing, teaching students and charter clients, I have witnessed many boating accidents, close calls, and have seen many inexperienced anglers just waiting for accidents to happen the way they operate and handle their boats. There are several tips a boater should learn before he or she launches their boat when spending time on the water. I share these boating "safety" tips with all of my students while attending my 3-day bass fishing school as well as my bass charter clients because I hope that I can help to eliminate some of these incidents that do happen unexpectantly (kinda like preventative maintenance on the water.) One of the first and probably the...

Fishing guides

I value my time. And when I don't have access to a boat and don't want to fish from shore, I don't hesitate to hire a guide. I especially like using a guide when I'm in a place I've never fished before and/or the location is especially good. But finding a good guide is important. And here is where you need to ask some important questions. When looking for a guide, a few important questions will help you distinguish between the good and the bad. I usually do my homework first by getting a fishing report for the area I plan to fish. Then I ask my prospective guide how good the fishing has been. The good ones will give you the straight story. I've even had some tell me it's not worth coming...

Reasonable people will readily agree that Life is a series of choices. We hope (and pray) that making good decisions will come more naturally as we mature and grow older. In conjunction with these concepts, most individuals acknowledge that as adults, "we are personally accountable for the results of those judgements"; an idea that some people have difficulty accepting. Being a fisherman is definitely a hugely, conscious decision. For some, "To Fish or Not To Fish" is never a consideration for the true angler. After all, a considerable investment of time, money and resources are required for the self-sufficient, stand-alone angler. As your fishing budget grows, the number of "required" items...

Worm Fishing

Posted by admin

There is probably no more popular fishing bait on the planet earth than the good old worm. Just for the record, I'm not speaking of the colorful plastic things that Bass fishermen use. No, I'm speaking of the real thing, a live worm and the best way to fish it. Some anglers believe it's as easy as buying a Styrofoam container of worms, tying on a size 4 hook, and threading a worm onto that hook. Of course worm fishing cam be done this way (if you're 10 years old), but an angler can get a bit more technical and learn how to present their worm naturally by employing a set of gang hooks. Worm fishing becomes as much of an art as fly fishing when a set of gang hooks and ultra light gear are used...

Summer Talk to any angler and they can expound for hours on the joys of carp fishing, whatever the time of year, but summer has got to be a favourite time. It's tranquil, relaxing and exciting all at the same time. Here are some tips to help make your carp fishing even more enjoyable. - Summer is a good time to try out new baits, rigs and ideas of your own - If you are a regular at a particular water, study the fish movements to see if you can establish any patterns that might give you a clue as to where to fish on future occasions - Look for obvious feeding grounds, for example, beneath overhanging trees and amongst weed beds - Carp are very active in the summer months, enjoying the sun as much as...

For many fishermen, fishing in Alaska means one thing....Halibut.I love Halibut.Especially steamed and grilled, with a tasty baked potato and an ice cold beverage! As far as fishing for Halibut, well, that is a different story, mainly because I had never done it.Now, most people I had talked to that had ventured out to sea to catch Halibut, have likened the experience to reeling in a "barn door" from the ocean floor, which doesn't exactly conjour up thoughts of epic battles with leaping Marlin. For me, I somehow had the vision of wrestling with an oversized mattress up a narrow flight of stairs.A lot of colorful language and struggling. With their sizes ranging anywhere from fifteen pound "chickens...

Bass fishing for many begins the first time they get that hit and proceeds from there to become a lifelong avocation. If you have just discovered bass fishing then it's time to start accumulating your bass fishing tackle. Over the course of your bass fishing lifetime you will probably have many rods and reels, literally hundreds of lures and a wide variety of storage boxes. However, the first gear you buy need not be expensive or abundant as long as it suits the needs of a novice bass angler.Rods. As you become more experienced you may find that you want several rods of varying lengths and made out of different materials. A good first rod for a neophyte fisherman is generally five and a half...

Trout fishing is fun way to enjoy your free time and it can be very rewarding to your diet. There are many places that you can catch trout around the USA. Salt water trout are abundant and do not really require much different equipment than the normal rod and reel found at any sporting goods store. They are usually small, so light tackle is more than adequite. Fishing lines with a low pound test are best because they won't be visable underwater. The best place to find them is in shallow rivers or the flats in small bays. A spinner is a great lure to use instead of live bait because it is easy and effective. However, night crawlers are a cheap live bait that last days in a styrofoam container...

Fishing lures are a key aspect of fishing and without them your chances of successfully catching a fish greatly diminish. Few fish will decide to come towards and bite a sharp shinny hook, while the vast majority of the fish will sense danger and swim away. Therefore it is very important that you have a way to attract the fish to your hook. There is a huge variety of different lures to choose from. Even with all the high tech products on the market which you can put on the hook in order to catch fish, I actually prefer to stick to the traditional way, the plastic worm. All that needs to be done is to gather a set of worms that can be found at any fishing store, place them in your tackle box with the...

Fly Fishing for Trout

Posted by admin

Fly casting is a skill that most fly fishermen would probably consider the most integral skill of fly fishing for trout. Certainly it is the most recognizable trait of fly fishing.BUT, if catching fish is as important to you as a great looking cast is, then you may actually need to be careful just how much casting you do.Fly fishing has far more in common with hunting than it does with other forms of fishing. This is because trout are such a timid creature and are so easily spooked. Although it is not such an issue if you are fishing deep in large bodies of water or in wide, fast flowing streams, it is still for this reason that casting can also be your worst enemy when trout fishing. The classical...

Did evolution begin on Long Island? There is overwhelming evidence suggesting that if you incubate three dozen worms in a solution of amino acids and carbon compounds for approximately one and a half million years they will eventually evolve into the Long Island Railroad. Sexual dysfunction, in one form or the other and in varying degrees, is common among both men and women. According to recent studies, a large percentage of all men and women encounter some sort of sexual dysfunction at some point in their lives. And as they grow older, such problems become increasingly common. In males, sexual dysfunction may be of different types like lack of desire, failure to obtain and/or maintain an erection, and other problems like premature ejaculation and ejaculatory impotence, or the inability to ejaculate in coitus. Erectile dysfunction, however, is certainly the cause for maximum concern. For the treatment of erectile dysfunction, three oral medications are available...

Fly Fishing in saltwater has become so popular in the last twenty five years in the Florida Keys that the Bonefish census board determined each fish is "worth" about 3,000.00. This is mostly due to the overwhelming amount of tourist who visit the Florida Keys each year to go fishing.Fly fishing in saltwater has always been a known sport amoung its enthusasts but not until the last few decades has it sparked an interest in many more anglers. It provides the ultimate challenge to many, the cast must be perfected, take into account the wind, the moving fish, the moving boat, and you have your perfect saltwater fly fishing scenario. Many fly rodders flock to the Florida Keys each year for the annual...

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled" (Matthew 5:6)."If you do right, you won't get hungry or thirsty," says Zach, age 6.Actually, the thirst here is something different, says Anna, 10: "It means that people who want righteousness thirst for it like water."Have you ever been thirsty -- I mean really thirsty? In the Arizona desert, I once took a walk I'll never forget. From my elevated campsite, the Colorado River looked like an easy 30-minute trek. I learned the meaning of "as the crow flies" because the dry ravine I followed was anything but straight and made the trip much longer. After my canteen ran dry, I began to be thirsty like never before.God...

Fishing rod holders take the inconvenience out of fishing for a variety of reasons. For one, it is a convenient storage device especially when one is in a kayak. Rather than holding the paddle in between the legs while fishing, a fishing rod holder stores the rod in place therefore enabling anyone to carry multiple rods or (if one insists so) carry multiple paddles. It also makes trolling easy as a holder keeps the fishing rod in place as one travels to a number of fishing spots. Also, when unhooking a caught fish, rod holders keep the rod secure. More importantly, they help one catch more fish at the same time enabling a kayak look versatile and extremely well-designed.Here are some tips that...

Today, all of us are worried about safety and security. Why at the moment, most of us who live with our families have all the time been concerned about safety. It is not sufficient that we live in brick and concrete houses with padlocks and bolts; we also need to make sure that the house and our belongings are protected when we go away. This is where first-rate alarm systems come into the picture!A good quality alarm system does just that - it alarms us or rather raises the alarm when somebody breaks into our home or safe to take our belongings. A basic alarm system is a trip wire that someone who is not allowed to use the system is in all probability unaware of. Most basic alarm systems work on...

Those familiar with the Worldwide Church of God know that after many years of observing what most would call "Jewish Holidays" but with Christian significance, the Church has now switched to the more generically acceptable Christians holidays, such as Easter and Christmas. In the past, these Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Fall Equinox and Winter Solstice holidays were replaced by the recognition of Passover over Easter in the Spring and the Festival of Tabernacles in the Fall over Christmas. While no religious holy day springs from a vacuum, and the Jewish Holy Days, also sprang from the pagan agricultural holidays that preceded them, I wonder if the Worldwide Church of God, and all Christians...

Fishing Unfamiliar & Fly-in LakesThere is a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment - the pride of craft - that comes with a successful day's fishing on a new, unfamiliar or fly-in lake, whether it is a limit of bass, a few walleyes for shore lunch, or a trophy pike. Not because putting fish in the boat is the measure of a successful outing, but because that success underlines the fact that the angler has effectively adapted to the existing fishing situations and conditions, making necessary changes in bait / lure selection, presentations and locations. That, in itself, is no small feat, even at fly-in lakes which supposedly teem with naive fish. Let me assure you that we always breathe a sigh of...

You can win many rounds of poker if you simply observe other players and their body language. You must carefully observe each move to determine if the player is a professional or a novice. A poker fish is usually a beginner who is highly enthusiastic and will bet even with average cards. You will find the poker fish at the lower limit poker games though they may occasionally play at the higher limit tables. You can win several games if poker fish are present at your table. You may lose a few games, but on an average the more you sit at a table, the more you will win against them. Once you recognize a poker fish at your table, you can develop a proper strategy and beat them hollow. You can beat the...

In my opinion, the most important thing to remember while river fishing is not to spook the water that you're about to fish. I've seen entirely too many anglers do this very thing. For example, they'll wade 1/4 of the way out into the river and begin fishing. Thus leaving themselves standing in the very water they probably should have fished first. The first tip is: When river fishing, remember to work the area that you want to fish in "sections". Don't just jump in and start fishing in the spot that you think looks the best. And don't just fish the water directly below where you're wading. Make your casts into the current then let your live bait or lure flow with the current until it is...

At one time or another, every fisherman goes through lean times. It doesn't seem to matter what you put in the water...it comes back empty. You go to your favorite fishing holes, try methods that always work, but you don't catch fish. The following is a set up I use that has worked wonders when it comes to catching trout, when nothing else will. It has put fish on my hooks, when nobody else in the vicinity was getting a nibble.First, use ultra light gear...fishing line no larger than 4lb, in green. Second, tie two small loops into your fishing line a foot or so apart, beginning about 18" above the end of your line. Next, attach 8" of the same fishing line to each loop. At the end of these...

Student Motivation ListAt this time of year many of our students have begun to loose focus, and interest begins to wane. As a result off-task behaviors begin to rise and classroom disruptions increase and we miss out on quite a bit of instructional time as we deal with these issues. It may be helpful (especially with the males in your classroom) to take this opportunity to build into our instruction some items of high interest. To that end, I am attaching to this message one of the surveys I provide students who have behavior challenges in an effort to find out some of their motivating factors. One of the biggest problems that we as river and stream fishermen face is how to efficiently carry a container of worms with us on our next fishing trip. If you are anything like me a river fishing trip can cover a couple of miles of river and involve crossing said river three to ten times. I carry my spinners, spoons, split-shot, pliers, and hooks in my fishing vest. So all of my fishing equipment is easily accessible, and ready to go. I used to have a problem with where to carry a couple of containers of worms. I would just put them in my vest and go from there. But then I ran into the problem of them getting hot and dieing, and not to mention the fact that it was a complete pain in the...

So what is the best way to present live bait? The best way to present live bait is really pretty simple. The best way is the natural way. You want your bait to appear to be as normal as possible. For example, if you're fishing in your favorite stream, you want is to seem to the fish that the worm that you're using for bait has just crawled out from under an underwater rock and is now tumbling naturally with the current. Or if you're lake fishing, you want the bait to appear as natural as is possible. The more natural your bait looks, the better results you will have. What you want to avoid is the ever popular "worm ball". This is where a fisherperson takes a worm and hooks it over and over on...

Some people may think I'm talking about some "airy fairy" new age subject when I title my article - How To Catch A Rainbow - but that's not what's going on here.
